Muslim Funerals – Death in Islam

Byrs 24 presents its partner, Al Jannah, which offers funeral services that fully respect Islamic traditions. The staff at Al Jannah specializes exclusively in Muslim funerals, conducting ceremonies in accordance with Islamic customs. This ensures a dignified and respectful farewell for both the deceased and their loved ones.

Islamic Rituals for Funerals

As a reliable Al Jannah, we perform Muslim funerals following traditional rituals that carry deep spiritual significance and symbolize respect for the deceased. Al Jannah works closely with religious communities in Norway to meet the family’s wishes. We tailor the funeral to the family’s needs, honoring the beliefs and traditions of the deceased. The ceremony consists of four important parts:

  • Ghusl (Ritual Washing)

The ritual washing cleanses the deceased and prepares them for burial. This ritual is an essential part of the process and emphasizes the significance of the moment.

  • Kafan (Shrouding)

The deceased is wrapped in a simple white garment, symbolizing equality for all people before Allah. This simplicity highlights that material values hold no importance in the afterlife.

  • Salat al-Janazah (Funeral Prayer)

The prayers are led by an imam or another qualified person. This prayer is a crucial moment where family and friends gather to seek forgiveness for the deceased and express their condolences.

  • Dafn (Burial)

The deceased is buried facing Mecca, which is an important principle in Islam. It is also essential that the burial takes place in a Muslim cemetery, where the deceased can rest among fellow believers.

We ensure that the burial occurs as quickly as possible, in accordance with Islamic tradition, while accommodating practical considerations in Norway. Here, it is customary to use a coffin, unlike the direct burial without a coffin practiced in many Muslim countries.

Ceremony and Burial

As a dedicated Al Jannah, the ceremony is led by an imam and includes prayers and religious texts. We customize the ceremony in accordance with the family’s wishes, which may include short speeches, poetry readings, or music. Our goal is to provide the bereaved with a dignified farewell and express gratitude to the deceased.

Al Jannah offers Muslim funerals with full respect for Islamic customs, where the deceased is buried in a Muslim cemetery, facing Mecca. This is crucial in the Muslim faith.

Support from Al Jannah

At Al Jannah, we offer more than just logistical services. As Al Jannah, we have both an imam and a Muslim psychologist on our team, ready to assist at every step. They are available to provide emotional and spiritual support to families at any time, making our services unique and important to our community.

Burial and Islamic Customs

The most important principle of a Muslim funeral is that the deceased must be buried facing Mecca. The burial should also take place in a Muslim cemetery, symbolizing belonging to the Muslim community. Visiting the grave is an important tradition, especially during Ramadan, Eid, and the Hajj pilgrimage, but it is also common to visit the grave every Friday.

Collection of the deceased

If you have not yet chosen a funeral home and you are facing a death at home or in hospital, you can use our emergency pick-up service. The service is available around the clock and can be adapted to your need for time.

We pick up the deceased by agreement with the next of kin. Collection of the deceased can take place immediately or at a later time, depending on what the relatives want.

Collection at a hospital or institution

In the event of death in hospital, the deceased is first moved to the hospital’s cold room. Most hospitals have a chapel where you can see the deceased. We organize further transport as needed. In institutions without a cold room, the deceased will be taken directly from the room and moved to the nearest hospital or reception chapel.

Collection at home

In the event of a death at home, the emergency room must be contacted to complete a death certificate. Only when this is done can the deceased be moved. The family decides how long the deceased will stay at home, and there is an opportunity to say goodbye in familiar surroundings. According to Norwegian law, the deceased must be placed in a coffin within 24 hours.

The room should be kept cool, and good cleanliness is important. We assist with advice and coordination to make the process as smooth as possible.

Valuables and clothing

If the death occurs at home, valuables remain with the family. In institutions, they are kept in the safe and can be retrieved by presenting a transfer certificate.
