Sikh Cremation Traditions
Sikhs follow the Indian custom of cremation. In India, cremation typically takes place on the same day or the next. In Norway, funerals usually occur within 4-6 days. Some families may request extra time to allow relatives traveling from abroad to attend.
Planning the Funeral
As a family member, you are welcome to schedule a planning meeting with us at Helsfyr, or we can come to your home or Gurdwara. Planning is done in cooperation with Gurdwara representatives, helping to find a suitable time for the service based on Gurdwara availability.
Ritual Washing and Viewing
We recommend conducting the ritual washing the day before the ceremony. Family members are encouraged to dress the deceased in their own clothes, with guidance from Byrå24. The rental of the room for ritual washing is included. Viewing for close relatives takes place in the adjacent ceremony room.
Ceremony Venue
A traditional ceremony venue with space for many guests is essential. Alfaset Chapel is highly recommended due to its large parking area and proximity to the Gurdwara. Another option in Oslo is Østre Gravlund’s large chapel, with the coffin later taken to Alfaset for placement.
Cremation and Ash Scattering
At the crematorium, a small number of family members can witness the coffin being placed in the cremation chamber. A text from Guru Granth Sahib is recited as the cremation begins.
Many Sikhs choose to scatter the ashes in flowing water. In Oslo, this takes place in Oslo Fjord. We assist with the application for ash scattering through the county governor.
Additional Services:
Transport of the Urn to India: If desired, we can arrange the necessary documentation for sending the urn to India. This is an additional service.
Memorial Page: Many families opt for a memorial page, but this is not included in the price example.
Important Notes:
If the deceased passes away at home or in an institution, they must be transported to the nearest hospital for ritual washing. This service incurs an additional fee.
The price includes a white-painted solid pine coffin and a large floral decoration for the coffin. Flower choices are made in cooperation with our experienced funeral florists.
For residents of Oslo, the cremation and urn are provided at no additional cost. For nearby municipalities, additional fees may apply for cremation and the municipal urn, billed directly by the municipality.
Byrå24 offers funeral services at the same price for the following municipalities: Asker, Bærum, Lier, Drammen, Lillestrøm, Lørenskog, Rælingen, Ullensaker, Nesodden, Drøbak Frogn, and Nordre Follo.
Funeral Support from NAV
If the deceased had limited financial resources, there may be eligibility for funeral support from NAV, covering up to 28,699 NOK. We can assist with the application process.
This package example assumes the place of death was a hospital.
